The Elementary Explanation: 4th Grade Students Explore Westward Expansion Through Podcasting

For the past two months, KMIH 88.9 The Bridge has worked with 4th grade students at West Mercer Elementary School to create podcasts about the California Gold Rush and westward expansion in the 19th century. The amazingly talented students in Mr. Baxter’s class wrote their own scripts, implemented their own sound effects, and narrated their stories. You can listen to “The Elementary Explanation” at 10 AM on Thursday, June 3rd on 88.9 The Bridge.

The students of Mr. Baxter’s class learned to produce high-quality podcasts over Zoom with radio-broadcasting teacher Joe Bryant and KMIH staff member Sidh Shroff. After only two sessions, the 4th graders were able to independently create their own podcasts from start to finish, applying the concepts they learned in class along the way.

During their class, Sidh introduced the students to the KMIH radio studios on a virtual tour and shared some stellar podcasts from the student staff of 88.9 The Bridge as a guide for their work. Sidh also gave an overview on the process of creating complete podcasts, and the students set off to work!

Through their podcasts, the 4th graders were able to exhibit their creativity in a unique way. Mr. Baxter’s students impressively stepped out of their comfort zone, proving that the future of broadcasting is in great hands!

The Elementary Explanation will be aired at 10 AM on Thursday, June 3rd. You can tune in via 88.9 FM or on the KMIH website at 889thebridge.org.
