ABRO


ABRO (Advanced Broadcasting and Radio Operations) is a class designed for third and fourth year broadcasting students that want to take an even deeper dive into learning about the broadcast and communications industry.

The primary mission of ABRO is for students to work as a team to produce quality programming that super serves MIHS and the Mercer Island community AND to take the lead on operating the station and mentoring other radio students. Excellence, engagement and encouragement of others are the expected norms. We are one big KMIH family and an attitude of fellowship and inclusion is something that begins every school day during 1st period ABRO.




Hayley nguyen - Program Director of Student Staff

Hayley is a senior at Mercer Island High School and it's her fourth year in the program! She is the Program Director of Student Staff and is looking forward to working with radio students from all of the classes this year. She also co-hosts the podcast 'Eating Adventures' and is excited to do more interviews for its final year. Outside of radio, Hayley enjoys skiing, reading, and spending time with family and friends!

 

Maggie Blohm - CO-Sports Director

Maggie is a senior at Mercer Island High School, currently in her fourth year at KMIH. Maggie will be leading the sports team this year, producing live broadcasts, daily sports reports, interviews and much more. Maggie has loved broadcasting sports since her first year on The Bridge, which prompted her interest in a career in sports journalism. Outside of radio, Maggie plays soccer for MIHS, skis, and enjoys taking classes at the fitness studio where she works.

 

anna Carson - Social Media Director

Anna is a Senior here at MIHS. She runs a weekly segment called the “snow report” where she gives updates for Washington’s ski mountains. Anna also is a member of the KMIH’s social media team where she helps create content for the 88.9 instagram account. Outside of radio, Anna plays soccer and is a captain of the track team.

 

Nicole Henderson - production Director

Nicole is a senior at Mercer Island. It is her 4th year in the radio program. She is excited to continue hosting Breakfast on the Bridge morning shows this year and to dive deeper into the news world with interview production. Outside of radio, Nicole loves to run and bake. You can listen to her show, Rush Hour, every Friday from 5-6 pm.

 

Hadley Holtzclaw - music Director

Hadley is a senior at Mercer Island High School. It is her 4th year in the radio program. She is excited to spearhead new programs on the station as well as head music programming to make the station sound great! Outside of radio, Hadley loves to coach sports, especially tennis. She loves all things film and is planning on going into anything media-related in college. She also plays tennis on the Mercer Island Girls Tennis Team.

 

Amuktha Josyula - Outreach Team

Amuktha is senior at Mercer Island. It is her fourth year in the program and she's excited to continue her news show, Rush Hour and conduct more interviews. She's also excited to expand the radio club this year and go live more often. Outside of radio she likes playing badminton and dancing. You can listen to Rush Hour every Friday from 5-6pm.

 

Kate Lenington - Morning show Team

Kate is a senior in her 4th year in the program. Kate is the executive producer and director of the live morning show Breakfast on the Bridge. She is excited to make great morning radio and lead the morning radio team. Kate also looks forward to continuing her pop culture show What Was That About with fellow senior Sophia Loiselle and working on a new music show with fellow senior Marley MacDonald. Outside of radio, Kate is a swim and dive team captain and a varsity water polo player for MIHS’s team.

 

Sophia Loiselle - Web Director

Sophia is a senior, a 4th year staff member, and KMIH’s Web Director. Sophia hosts the weekly feature STEM News You Can Use, and plans on exploring the impacts of AI in the coming year. Sophia loves to go live on Breakfast on the Bride, 88.9s morning show, and you can also hear here cohosting pop culture review show “What Was That About.” Outside of radio, Sophia captains MI’s girls lacrosse team, and enjoys skiing, reading and hiking.

 

Marley MacDonald - Programming director

Marley is a senior at Mercer Island High School. It's her third year in the program, and she's looking forward to working on the station's programming team and producing interviews. Outside of radio, Marley is a captain on the Mercer Island Cross Country team, and she loves playing guitar and writing music.

 

Toly Odievich - Engineering Director

Toly is a senior at MIHS. It is his fourth year of radio, and he's sure it will be his best one yet! When he isn't flying remote control airplanes at his local club, Toly spends his time at the station, serving as student engineer for KMIH. He loves managing sports broadcasts, hosting morning shows, and releasing new episodes of "You Didn't Know This!!" a KMIH fun fact show that airs on Tuesdays, on Breakfast on the Bridge!

 

Sam Paddor - Music Team

Sam is a senior at Mercer Island High School. It is his 4th year in radio. This year, he hopes to continue his music show "My Back Pages" where he interviews rock and roll musicians. Outside of radio, he spends a lot of time playing guitar and researching music history!

 

Penelope Thomas - Scheduling Director

Penelope is a Senior at Mercer Island High School and it is her third year in the radio program! She has a podcast on Spotify and 88.9 The Bridge called "Self Dialogue" that she's been recording episodes for since 11th grade. Penelope is also very excited to be coming into the ABRO program as Scheduling Director, where she organizes when shows from multiple class periods will be airing and makes sure they all have a time and place on the radio. Outside of 88.9, Penelope is Captain of the Mercer Island Drill Team and a teacher at a local dance studio that she's been working at since freshman year. She also enjoys watching movies, hanging out with friends, and traveling!

 

Joe Shleifer - Co-sports Director

Joe is a senior at Mercer Island High School and is entering his fourth year as a radio student. He is excited to continue running the sports department and live broadcast boys and girls basketball and boys and girls lacrosse. Outside of radio, Joe works at Greggs Cycles and is the captain of the varsity football team.

 

Chloe Yang - Outreach Team

Chloe is in her 4th year of radio at KMIH, and 2nd year of ABRO (the radio capstone course at Mercer Island High). At the station, she hosts two podcasts, Emerald City Echoes and Eating Adventures, together holding listeners in 25+ countries. Making global health accessible through radio is a main goal of Chloe's, though she also enjoys sharing Seattle's best restaurants and trying diverse dishes from cultures across the globe. She interviews elders from the Mercer Island Historical Society, as well as individuals who've shaped the Puget Sound, to capture the oral history of her community. Chloe enjoys golfing in her free time and works with the City of Mercer Island's Healthy Youth Initiative to improve the public health of her community.

 

Cooper Jensen - Sports Team

Cooper is a Junior at Mercer Island High School, it is his third year with KMIH 88.9 The Bridge. Cooper is very excited to learn more about broadcasting and continuing his show called Bop or Flop for a third year. You can listen to his show at 7pm on Fridays. Cooper is on the lacrosse and golf team at the school and he also loves to ski and mountain bike.

 

Aaliyah Khan - Sports team

Aaliyah is a junior at Mercer Island High School, it's her third year in the program. She is excited to continue her show Bop or Flop and create new content for the station. Outside of radio, Aaliyah loves spending time with her dog and running track. She loves to travel and explore the world. You can tune into Bop or Flop on Fridays at 7pm!

 

Chase Koehler - Sports Team

Chase is a junior at Mercer Island High School. It is his third year in the program. He is super excited to continue his show Karaoke Killas for the 2nd year in a row. Hes also pumped to continue daily sportscasts and broadcast sports games live on the air. Outside of radio, Chase plays baseball on the baseball team and helps run the pickleball club. You can tune in every wednesday at 3pm to catch Chase singing on The Karaoke Killas.

 

Brooke Newell - Music Team

Brooke is a junior at MIHS and this is her third year in the radio program. She is looking forward to taking on a bigger role in radio and starting a new show, as well as doing more interviews. Outside of school Brooke enjoys playing tennis, traveling, and baking.

 

Kylie Oordt - sports team

Kylie is a junior at Mercer Island High School. It is her third year of being in
the KMIH radio program and her first year being a part of the ABRO class and she is very excited to continue working on her shows and broadcasts! Outside of radio, Kylie is on the cheer team, she lifeguards at Mercerwood Shore Club and loves hanging out with her friends.

 

Nova Shiers - Morning show production team

Nova is a Junior at Mercer Island High School. It is Her 3rd year in the radio program, but her first in ABRO. She specializes in editing and production and works on many jobs, small and large, serious, or silly, being KMIH’s, go-to editor. Outside of radio, you will find her in the mountains as she is an avid mountain biker and skier and loves space and stargazing.

 

Mia Tamarkin - marketing team

Mia is a Junior at Mercer Island High School. It is her third year in the radio program and she is excited to do interviews and host new shows. Outside of radio, Mia enjoys playing goalie on her soccer team, playing tennis, reading, and sailing.
